Bits, Bytes, and the Binary System

The fundamental unit of digital information is the bit (binary digit), which can be either 0 or 1. A byte consists of 8 bits and can represent 256 different values (2⁸). However, a critical ambiguity exists: computer memory naturally works in powers of 2 (1,024 = 2¹⁰), while the SI prefix system uses powers of 10 (1,000). To resolve this, the IEC introduced binary prefixes: kibibyte (KiB = 1,024 bytes), mebibyte (MiB = 1,048,576 bytes), gibibyte (GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes), etc.

Why Your Hard Drive Seems Smaller Than Advertised

Storage manufacturers use decimal (SI) definitions: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems (particularly Windows) display sizes using binary definitions: 1 TB = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. This discrepancy means a "1 TB" drive shows as approximately 931 GB in Windows. The difference grows with size — a "4 TB" drive appears as about 3.64 TB. This isn't deceptive; it's a genuine ambiguity in terminology. Internet Speed vs Storage

Internet speeds are measured in bits per second (bps), while file sizes are measured in bytes. This means you must divide your internet speed by 8 to calculate download times.
